Assignment 3274

The Circumplex Model of Affect and the Anger-Fear Sequence:

1. Look at the “Anger-Fear Sequence” in Wilmot & Hocker Chapter 6 and the accompanying list of interpersonal anger situations listed. Study these and list three angry situations of your own and determine how fear/anxiety might be mixed in with your own anger.

Note: Use the same model as in W&H. For example, the first interpersonal anger situation is written as:

“A woman is angry at her friend for calling her a name in public. (She is fearful of not being accepted by others and losing face).”

In your example, you will use the same format. For instance, you might write something like:

“I am furious at my friend for cancelling our plans for Friday night. (I am afraid that she no longer values me as her friend).”

“My mother is angry with my sister for not calling her on her birthday. (She is fearful that my sister only calls her when she needs something).”

2. After you have written out your examples, look at the left side of the circumplex model of affect in Wilmot & Hocker, (file attached), and choose what emotions might also be applied to the situations you wrote about.

Also list if these emotions would be classified as “Activation/Unpleasant” or Deactivation/Unpleasant” according to the model.

3. Explain why you chose these emotions (ie. what behaviors have you seen or words have you heard being used that made you choose them?).

4. Take a look at the left side of the model. Why are some “unpleasant” emotions categorized under “Activation/Unpleasant” and others are listed under “Deactivation/Unpleasant”?
